The ideal adaptable building solution should be appropriate for society’s current wants and needs but more importantly tomorrow’s. Adaptable Futures has put together a graphic they call Framecycle (above). Melfi Headquarters (below) is a great example of architecture that employs many of these adaptable strategies.

Strategies: versatile, convertible, refitable, scalable
The site in which Melfi Headquarters was built is in the industrial area of Pettoanello, near Isernia, this area surrounded by mountains was once a wetland. There are two buildings on the site, a square shed and an office building.
The building was built with concrete framing along with other simple building techniques to create “a rhythmic solution of orthogonal spaces using a standard 6 meter grid.” The strategy of versatility is applied through the use of a simple concrete framing as well as the shed’s extra storage space. this building also uses the refitable strategy with the coordinated system that is created with “a rhythmic solution of orthogonal spaces using a standard 6 meter grid”. As of 2012 at least four rooms has changed uses (ex. laboratory to flexible meeting space) (see picture below) joining together by “by the removal of drywall partitions and doors to support the changing needs of the occupants,” this provides evidence to a scalable strategy because of the joining of rooms.
The implication of moving wall components throughout the office and continuation of floor coverings add to the overall scalability, and versatility of the building. This building is also refitable in that “a legible circulation system (coordinated system) makes orientation easy, as well as enhances visual-spatial relationships between the interior and exterior spaces. The lobby is a good example of a large ‘circulation’ space which can be used for events and/ or temporary exhibitions given its large size and natural daylight (convertibility).”
